Overview

What Modafinil is

Modafinil is a wakefulness-promoting agent. In the UK and EU it is authorised for excessive sleepiness associated with narcolepsy. It is a controlled substance in some markets, including the United States.

Suitability and dosing are decided by a prescriber on the basis of the approved product information.

How it works

Wakefulness, not stimulation in the usual sense

Modafinil promotes wakefulness. Its exact mechanism is not fully understood; it acts on the dopamine transporter and on several brain systems that regulate sleep and waking.

In the UK and the EU it is authorised only for excessive sleepiness associated with narcolepsy. In 2010 the European Medicines Agency restricted its use to this indication after reviewing the benefits and risks.1
