Overview

What finasteride 1 mg is

Finasteride inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). At 1 mg it is used for male pattern hair loss, as set out in its product information.

How it works

Less DHT at the hair follicle

Finasteride inhibits type 2 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the scalp. Lower DHT slows the miniaturisation of hair follicles that causes male pattern hair loss.

Type 2 5-alpha-reductaseInhibited; less DHT in the scalp.
TimescaleEffects usually appear after 3–6 months of daily use.

In two one-year trials in men with male pattern hair loss, finasteride 1 mg increased hair counts compared with placebo.1 The effect is reversed within about 12 months of stopping.
