Overview

What Elvanse is

Elvanse contains lisdexamfetamine dimesylate, a prodrug that is converted in the body to dexamfetamine. It is used as part of a comprehensive treatment programme for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is a controlled drug and is supplied only under strict prescription rules. Elvanse is the brand name used in the UK and Europe.

Suitability and dosing are decided by a prescriber on the basis of the approved product information.

How it works

A prodrug, released gradually

Lisdexamfetamine is inactive as taken. After absorption it is converted in the blood to dexamfetamine, which increases the activity of dopamine and noradrenaline in the brain. The gradual conversion gives an effect that lasts through the day with once-daily dosing.

LisdexamfetamineInactive prodrug, taken once daily in the morning.
DexamfetamineActive form: increases dopamine and noradrenaline signalling.

It is used as part of a comprehensive treatment programme that includes psychological, educational and social measures.1
