Overview

What Vyvanse is

Vyvanse is the brand name of lisdexamfetamine dimesylate in the United States, Canada and Australia. It is used for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and, in some markets, for moderate to severe binge eating disorder in adults. It is a controlled drug supplied only under strict prescription rules.

Suitability and dosing are decided by a prescriber on the basis of the approved product information.

How it works

A prodrug, released gradually

Lisdexamfetamine is inactive as taken. After absorption it is converted in the blood to dexamfetamine, which increases the activity of dopamine and noradrenaline in the brain. The gradual conversion gives an effect that lasts through the day with once-daily dosing.

LisdexamfetamineInactive prodrug, taken once daily in the morning.
DexamfetamineActive form: increases dopamine and noradrenaline signalling.

It is used as part of a comprehensive treatment programme that includes psychological, educational and social measures.1
