Overview

What Mysimba is

Mysimba combines naltrexone, an opioid antagonist, and bupropion, a noradrenaline and dopamine reuptake inhibitor, in prolonged-release tablets. It is used, alongside diet and physical activity, for weight management in adults. In the US the same combination is marketed as Contrave.

Suitability and dosing are decided by a prescriber on the basis of the approved product information.

How it works

Two medicines, one prolonged-release tablet

Naltrexone and bupropion act on areas of the brain involved in appetite and in the reward associated with food. The exact way the combination reduces food intake is not fully understood.

BupropionInhibits the reuptake of dopamine and noradrenaline.
NaltrexoneOpioid receptor antagonist.

In the COR-I trial, adults with obesity or overweight lost more weight over 56 weeks with naltrexone–bupropion than with placebo, alongside diet and exercise.1

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need a prescription?

Mysimba is a prescription-only medicine. After your request, the partner pharmacy verifies whether and how supply is possible, for example through an existing prescription or an assessment by an independent doctor where permitted.

Is it the same as Contrave?

Yes. The same combination of naltrexone and bupropion is marketed as Contrave in the US and as Mysimba in the UK and the EU.

How soon is its effect reviewed?

The product information sets a review point: treatment should be stopped after 16 weeks if at least 5% of initial body weight has not been lost.

Do I pay when I send a request?

No. Payment is arranged individually with customer service once your request has been reviewed and can proceed.
