What minoxidil 5% is
Minoxidil cutaneous solution is applied to the scalp and is used for androgenetic alopecia, as set out in its product information.
Longer growth phase, applied to the scalp
Minoxidil was first used as a tablet for high blood pressure; hair growth was an observed side effect. Applied to the scalp, it prolongs the growth phase of the hair cycle and enlarges miniaturized follicles. The exact mechanism is not fully understood.
In a 48-week trial in men, 5% minoxidil solution produced greater regrowth than 2% solution and placebo.1 The benefit is lost within a few months of stopping.
Side effects and warnings
Reported side effects are mostly local:
- Itching, dryness, flaking and redness of the scalp
- Unwanted hair growth on the face or body
- Temporary increase in hair shedding in the first weeks
Product information
Common questions
How long before I see results?
Several months of regular twice-daily use; the product information describes the period after which treatment should be reviewed if there is no improvement.
Is increased shedding at the start normal?
A temporary increase in shedding can occur in the first weeks, as resting hairs are replaced by new growth. If it continues, ask for advice.
Do I pay when I send a request?
No. Payment is arranged individually with customer service once your request has been reviewed and can proceed.
