It is used for type 2 diabetes.<\/p><p>Suitability and dosing are decided by a prescriber on the basis of the approved product information.<\/p><\/section>\n<section id=\"how\" data-nav=\"How it works\"><span class=\"kicker\">How it works<\/span><h2>GLP\u20111 for type 2 diabetes, <em>once a day<\/em><\/h2><p>Liraglutide closely resembles human GLP\u20111. When blood glucose is raised it increases insulin release and lowers glucagon, and it slows gastric emptying. Its half-life of about 13 hours allows once-daily dosing.<\/p><div class=\"mech\"><div><b>Pancreas<\/b><span>More insulin and less glucagon when glucose is raised.<\/span><\/div><div><b>Gut and brain<\/b><span>Slower gastric emptying, less appetite.<\/span><\/div><\/div><p>In LEADER, liraglutide reduced major cardiovascular events compared with placebo in people with type 2 diabetes at high cardiovascular risk.<sup><a href=\"#references\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p><\/section>\n<section id=\"safety\" data-nav=\"Safety\"><span class=\"kicker\">Safety<\/span><h2>Side effects and warnings<\/h2><p>The most commonly reported side effects are gastrointestinal:<\/p><ul class=\"bul\"><li>Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal pain, mostly while the dose is being increased<\/li><li>Low blood sugar when used with insulin or a sulfonylurea<\/li><li>Gallbladder problems, including gallstones<\/li><\/ul><div class=\"warn\"><svg class=\"icon\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><use href=\"#i-alert\"\/><\/svg><div><strong>Important<\/strong>Seek medical help promptly for severe, persistent abdominal pain, which may be a sign of pancreatitis.
