The dose is increased gradually; suitability and dosing are decided by a prescriber on the basis of the approved product information.<\/p><\/section>\n<section id=\"how\" data-nav=\"How it works\"><span class=\"kicker\">How it works<\/span><h2>GLP\u20111 receptor agonist, <em>at a weight-management dose<\/em><\/h2><p>Semaglutide mimics GLP\u20111, a gut hormone released after meals. It acts on areas of the brain that regulate appetite, increasing fullness and reducing hunger, and slows gastric emptying. When blood glucose is raised it also increases insulin release.<\/p><div class=\"mech\"><div><b>Brain<\/b><span>Less hunger, more fullness, fewer cravings.<\/span><\/div><div><b>Gut and pancreas<\/b><span>Slower gastric emptying; glucose-dependent insulin release.<\/span><\/div><\/div><p>In STEP 1, adults with overweight or obesity without diabetes lost an average of 14.9% of body weight over 68 weeks with semaglutide 2.4 mg, against 2.4% with placebo, alongside diet and physical activity.<sup><a href=\"#references\">1<\/a><\/sup> In SELECT, it reduced major cardiovascular events in adults with established cardiovascular disease and overweight or obesity.<sup><a href=\"#references\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p><\/section>\n<section id=\"safety\" data-nav=\"Safety\"><span class=\"kicker\">Safety<\/span><h2>Side effects and warnings<\/h2><p>The most commonly reported side effects are gastrointestinal:<\/p><ul class=\"bul\"><li>Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal pain, mostly while the dose is being increased<\/li><li>Gallbladder problems, including gallstones<\/li><li>Dehydration from vomiting or diarrhoea, which can affect kidney function<\/li><li>Very rarely, a condition of the optic nerve (NAION) causing sudden loss of vision has been reported with semaglutide; sudden changes in vision need urgent medical attention.<sup><a href=\"#references\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/li><\/ul><div class=\"warn\"><svg class=\"icon\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><use href=\"#i-alert\"\/><\/svg><div><strong>Important<\/strong>Seek medical help promptly for severe, persistent abdominal pain, which may be a sign of pancreatitis. After your request, the partner pharmacy verifies whether and how supply is possible, for example through an existing prescription or an assessment by an independent doctor where permitted.<\/p><\/details><details><summary>How is it different from Ozempic?<svg class=\"icon\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><use href=\"#i-plus\"\/><\/svg><\/summary><p>Both contain semaglutide. Wegovy is authorised for weight management, with its own doses and product information; Ozempic is authorised for type 2 diabetes.<\/p><\/details><details><summary>How is it different from Mounjaro?<svg class=\"icon\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><use href=\"#i-plus\"\/><\/svg><\/summary><p>Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which acts on both the GIP and GLP\u20111 receptors. Semaglutide acts on the GLP\u20111 receptor only.<\/p><\/details><details><summary>Why is the dose increased gradually?<svg class=\"icon\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><use href=\"#i-plus\"\/><\/svg><\/summary><p>Starting low and increasing step by step helps to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
