It is given as a once-weekly injection under the skin using a pre-filled pen.<\/p><p>The strength is usually increased gradually. The right dose, and whether the medicine is suitable at all, are decided by a prescriber on the basis of the approved product information.<\/p><\/section>\n<section id=\"how\" data-nav=\"How it works\"><span class=\"kicker\">How it works<\/span><h2>Two incretin receptors, <em>one molecule<\/em><\/h2><p>Tirzepatide mimics two gut hormones released after meals: it increases glucose-dependent insulin release, reduces glucagon, slows gastric emptying and reduces appetite.<\/p><div class=\"mech\"><div><b>GIP receptor<\/b><span>Stimulates insulin release when glucose is raised.<\/span><\/div><div><b>GLP\u20111 receptor<\/b><span>Insulin release, lower glucagon, slower gastric emptying, satiety.<\/span><\/div><\/div><p>In SURMOUNT-1, adults with obesity or overweight without diabetes lost substantially more weight with tirzepatide than with placebo over 72 weeks.<sup><a href=\"#references\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p><\/section>\n<section id=\"safety\" data-nav=\"Safety\"><span class=\"kicker\">Safety<\/span><h2>Side effects and warnings<\/h2><p>The most commonly reported side effects are gastrointestinal, usually during dose increases:<\/p><ul class=\"bul\"><li>Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting and constipation<\/li><li>Reduced appetite, indigestion and abdominal pain<\/li><\/ul><div class=\"warn\"><svg class=\"icon\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><use href=\"#i-alert\"\/><\/svg><div><strong>Important<\/strong>Seek medical help promptly for severe, persistent abdominal pain, which may be a sign of pancreatitis. After your request, the partner pharmacy verifies whether and how supply is possible, for example through an existing prescription or an assessment by an independent doctor where permitted.<\/p><\/details><details><summary>How is it different from Wegovy?<svg class=\"icon\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><use href=\"#i-plus\"\/><\/svg><\/summary><p>Wegovy contains semaglutide, which acts on the GLP\u20111 receptor only.
