It is used for erectile dysfunction and works only with sexual stimulation.<\/p><p>Suitability and dosing are decided by a prescriber on the basis of the approved product information.<\/p><\/section>\n<section id=\"how\" data-nav=\"How it works\"><span class=\"kicker\">How it works<\/span><h2>PDE5 inhibition, <em>with sexual stimulation<\/em><\/h2><p>During sexual stimulation, nitric oxide raises levels of cGMP in the penis, relaxing smooth muscle and increasing blood flow. Sildenafil blocks PDE5, the enzyme that breaks down cGMP, so the natural response is stronger and lasts longer. Without sexual stimulation it has no effect.<\/p><div class=\"mech\"><div><b>PDE5<\/b><span>Inhibited; cGMP breaks down more slowly.<\/span><\/div><div><b>Timing<\/b><span>Usually taken about one hour before sexual activity.<\/span><\/div><\/div><p>In placebo-controlled trials, sildenafil improved erections in men with erectile dysfunction of different causes.<sup><a href=\"#references\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p><\/section>\n<section id=\"safety\" data-nav=\"Safety\"><span class=\"kicker\">Safety<\/span><h2>Side effects and warnings<\/h2><p>Commonly reported side effects include:<\/p><ul class=\"bul\"><li>Headache, flushing and indigestion<\/li><li>Nasal congestion and dizziness<\/li><li>Temporary changes in vision, such as a blue tinge<\/li><\/ul><div class=\"warn\"><svg class=\"icon\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><use href=\"#i-alert\"\/><\/svg><div><strong>Important<\/strong>Must not be taken with nitrates or riociguat, as the combination can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
